Many of us geeks are already aware of a sub-genre of science fiction called Steampunk. It has made its way into many popular games and graphic novels. I thought that I would devote some time to explain to the un-initiated what it is.
I came across this interesting article describing what steampunk is: http://www.tor.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=blog&id=58009. This is the best description I have seen, and the pictures associated with it are gorgeous.
I think the main draw of this style is a mixture of old and new. Giant robots and mechanica powered by old steam based technology makes for an interesting dichotomy with the Victorian era style costumes awhich are elaborate and gorgeous.
Many Magic: The Gathering players are familiar with the artwork of Phil and Kaja Foglio from many o f their favorite cards. Their latest project is the http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/ comic. This is a pure example of steampunk. It is a humorous comic that is extremely well written and exquisitely drawn.
Many of the Final Fantasy games have a strong basis in steam punk. The airships that are so prevalent in the games are definitely steampunk, as are the costumes of the characters. One of the trademark symbols of a steampunk costume are goggles, and many Final Fantasy characters wear them.
The new miniature game I have just started collecting http://privateerpress.com/ is also steampunk based. It has magicians running around with arcane generators powered by steam controlling large mechs which are also powered by steam engines. As with many steampunk universes it is a wonderful blend of magic and science, two topics that feature strongly in geek culture.
I heartily encourage all geeks and geekettes to look into this awesome phenomena whether its through games, books, or movies/TV you will enjoy it.
