A vacation is a chance for people to unwind and unburden themselves of their problems, albeit for a short temporary period.  For most people this includes letting their brain take a rest and not think about much during their vacation time.  For the geek, this is not always the case.  Geeks enjoy using their brain and for them a vacation is a great opportunity to use it in a way they do not normally get to, this is the Geek’s Vacation.

I recently took a small vacation to visit some friends (D W Hawthorn among them).  Instead of letting my brain take a rest I decided to put it to good use, playing board games; games such as Dominion, Axis and Allies, Settlers, and Betrayal at the House on the Hill.  All of these games require a certain amount of wit and thinking to play effectively.  I do not get to play some of these games that often, so it was refreshing to use my brain in such a way to play them.

Another part of this vacation that was appealing was the ability to share some of these games with some of my friends that have never played them before.  My friends had never played Dominion and they loved it.  So not only did I exercise my brain in a recreational manner, I got my friends to join in as well.

On one of my previous trips to see them I spent a large part of my time working on a web development project with my friend.  This is similar to what I do at work (and here at IGT) but I was using it for a project for me.  Many of us Geeks enjoy using our geek skills but rarely get a chance to apply it to projects of our choosing; we usually get handed projects by our bosses with no choice.  This may sound like using a vacation to work, but it is really quite liberating.

Traditional vacations still have their place in geek society.  I do not know of any geek who would turn down a trip to Hawaii to bask in the sun and relax.  Chances are, however, that even while relaxing your geek mind is still working on something in the background.

So my advice to you fellow geeks is to take some time and just do some relaxing thinking for yourself.  Whether it be starting a new project, or just playing some fun thinking games, go do it and have yourself a Geek’s Vacation.
