This past weekend hurricane (or tropical storm depending on where you live) Irene ravaged the Eastern Seaboard of the US.  I was one of the many who were caught in Irene’s wrath and I was without power for most of Sunday.  While somewhat patiently waiting for the power company to fix the issue I found myself bemoaning the lack of internet and TV to keep me occupied.  It was then that I realized I don’t need no stinkin’ power to have fun.

One of the definitive geeky activities requires no electricity to enjoy, which is of course the act of reading.  In my time of need my books were there to save me from boredom.  I picked up my current book and went to town on it.  If you ever need a suggestion check out our book review section right here on IGT.

If you are feeling more social you can always fall back on an ever growing stable of card games and board games.  My friends and I really enjoy Settlers of Catan and Dominion, just to name a couple.  These will not only keep your mind occupied from the state of food in your refrigerator, but will also provide some social activities which us geeks often lack.

So next time your power goes out break out the candles and select a book from your shelf or find some friends to play games with.  Let those un-enlightened moan about how they are bored.
