In the world of geekdom there are few things sought after as much as rumors about new technologies. Yesterday’s iPhone announcement is a prime example. For weeks people have been speculating over whether or not the iPhone 5 would be announced or the iPhone 4S. Turns out it was the 4S and that has left many people disappointed, especially stockholders as Apple’s price fell after the announcement.
I used to drool over the latest tech rumors rabidly myself. I was constantly scanning tech websites for news of new processors, graphics cards, hard drives, you name it. I still keep my eyes on new software developments, mostly web browsers, but that is part of my occupation.
A couple of years ago I realized something that made me quit my rumors addiction. Eventually all of these rumors will be put to bed when the actual announcement or product is published. And when it is published most of the rumors will be shown as false, leaving many people to bemoan the failed ones. I had my little geek heart crushed too many times after having it set on false rumors.
So my advice to you rumor-seekers out there be patient. Go ahead and read the rumors and discuss them amongst yourselves. But do not get stuck on just one or think that any of them are THE TRUTH and plan accordingly. This is a certain path to geek heartache.
P.S. RIP Steve Jobs, thanks for three decades of incredible service and many great products. You truly were the greatest innovator of our time.
