Remote Desktop Enable

Welcome to another fantabulous addition to the IT toolbox. So this tip is sorta prereqed that you work or live in an environment that has multiple computers and you have admin access to all of them. With me, working for the man in big corporate America, I have a TON of machines that I need to access every day.

Sometimes, these machine are difficult to connect to and generally don’t want to cooperate. More often than not, I don’t really want to get up from my desk and interrupt my web browsing either. Well the simple way past that is enabling remote desktop.” But, john,” you say, “you would need to bother your users to do that.” Or even worse, “you’d need to get up. Nope there is an easier way. Here are the steps:
  1. Go to the registry

    1. Start->run->regedit

  2. Then Use the network registry feature

    1. File -> Connect Network Registry

    2. Once you get to this screen add the computername as the object name and press Ok

  3. Once we are connected, navigate to the follow registry key

    1. \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server

  4. Look at the fDenyTSconnections string value. If this is 1 you need to switch it to 0 to enable remote connection, if it is not, leave it alone.

  5. You should need to reboot, after this use the remote desktop connection and connect to the machine name.

    1. Start->program->accessories

This has been another entry in It’s Geek time IT toolbox. We do the boring stuff so you have more time for funions… and other equally awesome things.
