As all of you loyal and adoring fans may have noticed, It’s Geektime has undergone a facelift. This surgery was far more than merely cosmetic. Some changes have gone on, “under the hood” so to speak to improve standards compliance and performance.
The first thing you will notice is the site has gone down from three columns to two. To do this the navigation bar has morphed from a vertically stacked menu to a horizontally aligned menu at the top of the site. The other pieces from the left hand side bar have also moved to the top of the site to better consolidate the site's look. The lack of left hand sidebar has made more room for the content section. This will allow for more content on some pages and wider content on others.
One of the things, that you will not notice, is the content has been rearranged on the page such that the actual content loads first. This is all done in the HTML in such a way that the content of the page is loaded before the navigation bar and modules at the top of the page, but, the top modules and navigation bar appear first visually. The main benefit to this is that Google and other search engines will read the content first which is important for SEO.
Another thing you will notice is our banner has been simplified from a full image to one logo and modules. The new logo was created for us by one of our artist friends and you will be seeing it a lot in the It’s Geektime universe.
Another performance enhancement is the HTML of the site has been reduced for faster load times. All layout tables have also been removed and replaced with <div>s for better performance and standards compliance. You may not notice these enhancements, but they are there nonetheless.
I hope you all enjoy the new site and if you are going to New York Comic Con this week we may see you there!
