The Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) is most closely associated with web pages and the internet.  This technology has brought us many things over the years, from Facebook to adorable kitten pictures, to the everlasting Rick Roll.  What many of you do not know, is HTML is used in many other places than just the internet serving web pages.

Another common use of HTML is email.  Chances are you use an email client or website that lets you format emails to look nice.  Your client does this by using HTML; so each time you send an email you are basically sending a single web page.  This can also cause some problems if your recipient cannot view HTML emails, but these are becoming rarer.

I was tasked at work last week to find a way to turn a power point presentation into a flash movie.  The utility I found worked great, with one caveat.  The HTML file it created to view the movie had a horrible title, basically the name of the application that created it.  Due to my knowledge of basic HTML, changing the title to something more appropriate to the presentation was a snap.

HTML is such a universal and ubiquitous technology that it is perfect for programs and applications to use for formatting text.  Chances are you will encounter one of these in your career and you will be glad you learned how to use it.  Not to mention the possibility that you may find yourself making a web page or two on your own.
