Gav Thorpe’s recent novel Path of the Warrior is set with the rich tapestry of Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe as its backdrop.  It focuses and expands the mythology of the universe by delving into the enigmatic Eldar race shedding new light on the denizens of the craftworlds, sometimes referred to as “Space Elves.”

This novel is not for the neophyte and is not a good introductory work for anyone who might be interested in delving into Games Workshop’s mythology.  However, for people familiar with the esthetic and basic concepts of the grim dark background it becomes instant canon.  It expands the existing lore of the Eldar and clarifies their cultural belief system.  It also provides some specific details of craftworld life and how the Eldar interact with or disdain other species.

Set on the Alaitoc Craftworld, the novel follows Korlandril as he progresses along the Eldar Path (a progressive series of professions that each scar the soul in their own unique way) to the Path of the Warrior.  He sheds the path of the Artist to become one of the craftworld’s Aspect Warriors, a deadly Striking Scorpion, an assassin like group of warriors.

The story is excellent for the insight it provides, but as a single piece it feels incomplete.  There is an expectation that Thorpe will explore this story line further in two follow up novels.  My best guess is that they will be The Path of the Wanderer and The Path of the Seer and will follow two of the prominent side-characters in the storyline and bring their collective tale to one interwoven conclusion.  I anticipate revisiting certain scenes from the point of view of the other prominent characters.

For non-fans of Games Workshops IP I suggest you pass this book by, but for fans that already have a working knowledge of the world I rate this book a 3.02 out of 3.14.
