Our first video game review, which I know I was really excited about, is going to be a game called Prototype. Now, we played it on the Xbox 360, but just like most games these days, it was released across multiple platforms as well as for the PC. Prototype was released in the US on June 9th of this past year. It quickly sold almost half a million units and became one of the higher rated games of the year. Being a New Yorker I was impressed with the level that they took to try to replicate New York City, the games backdrop.

Ever wish you had a superpower? Ever want to be able to bound through a place like New York City with a total disregard for rules and even law? Prototype gives you that and even more. The main character, Alex Mercer, wakes on a cold slab at a NYC morgue only to realize he is part of some government conspiracy. He quickly finds out that bullets barely scratch him and he has amazing strength and agility. If that wasn’t enough, you find that you are a powerful shape shifter able to make implements of death and doom out of your body ala the T1000. I think one of my favorite parts of this game has to be taking your razor sharp whip implement and grappling onto the back of a Blackhawk helicopter. You can then consume the helicopter pilot only to learn everything he knows and be able to pilot the chopper through NYC. There is a wide array of powers including giant deadly claws and a sword arm that chops through A1M1 tanks like butter.

I was very impressed with Prototype. It has a very engaging storyline with well placed CG cut scenes. The controls are fairly seamless to the point where you really can switch between your offensive and defensive powers in the middle of a massive battle. Prototype succeeds down to the music and reactions of the semi intelligent AI driven civilians.

Whether you want to just go and murder hundreds of New Yorkers, run up the side of the Empire State Building, or take down a massive government conspiracy, prototype is for you. I’d like to give Prototype a massive It’s Geektime Honor of 9 on our D10 of destruction. It’s good old fashioned murderous rampaging fun.
